Freedom (part five)
Posted on March 28th, 2015 by T'Lira

Eddie Harrel cursed his own stupidity. Why did he come up with this plan? He really should have listened to the others.

“I told you,” he snarled at the Vorta and the Jem’Hadar, “I’m not giving you the codes. You’re not getting my ship!”

The Vorta looked mildly impressed, “You are rather resistant. It’s such a shame that you’re lying to me. I had a check run of the crew manifest. The captain is a Tellarite and the first officer is an Andorian. Interesting how a cadet took control.”

Shit. Well, nice knowing you, universe.

Eddie was about to reply with some lie, but the door to the captain’s Ready Room burst open and seven people spilled out, firing at the enemy as they did so.

T’Lira typed in the code that opened the Jeffries tube access hatch in the Ready Room and went through, followed by the others.

“Cover the hatch,” she ordered one of her fellow cadets. She couldn’t remember the young human’s name at the moment and deemed it unimportant at the moment.

The others moved over to the door and got ready to storm the bridge.

“On three,” T’Lira told them, “One, two, three.”

Someone opened the door and all hell broke loose. They went out firing, taking down six Jem’Hadar and stunning the Vorta in a surprise attack.

But they weren’t done yet. Four more Jem’Hadar were still on the bridge, but the close quarters meant one thing: hand to hand combat.

While two medical cadets went to help Eddie and the other bridge officers, the other five went hand to hand with genetically engineered soldiers.

One of the Jem’Hadar pulled a blade and swung at a navigation cadet. T’Lira wasn’t even thinking, she stuck her arm out in front of the cadet and the blade swept across her arm, right down to her palm. She pushed the pain to the back of her mind and shot the Jem’Hadar with her phaser. By now, the others had taken down the rest.

“Bridge to Sickbay!” a lieutenant shouted, “Medical emergency on the bridge! Captain Grek is down and the team that took back the bridge is injured!”

“Bridge, this is Cadet Lyrsin. A team is on their way now.”

The lieutenant replied with something, but T’Lira didn’t catch it. Eddie was crouched nearby and she realized she was sitting on the floor.

“You alright?” Eddie asked, “I don’t think I’ve ever seen any Vulcan this shaken up before.”

“Most Vulcans do not fight in hand to hand combat with Jem’Hadar,” T’Lira replied, belatedly remembering the pain.

“Good point,” her fellow cadet chuckled, pulling off his uniform jacket and tearing it into strips.

“What are you doing?” she asked.

He looked at her oddly, “Uh, in case you didn’t notice, you’re kinda bleeding.”

She looked at her arm, “Oh. Very well.”

Eddie grinned and went to work. T’Lira thought he hadn’t done so bad for someone whose life goal was to be a doctor.

I appreciate the limited perspective you’ve written this in, with T’Lira even not remembering someone’s name. It makes the read very personal to the main character. I also liked how you started from the rescuee’s point of view. Effective!

Seconding the use of perspective, something oft-overlooked in writing. Great series overall, and congratulations on winning Log of the Month!
