Happy Birthday, Voyager I!
Posted on September 5th, 2012 by Ian Blackthorne

Thirty-five years ago today, Voyager I was launched to study Jupiter and Saturn, and on its way out, took the “Family Portrait” of our solar system, which gave us the “Pale Blue Dot” picture of Earth. Now, Voyager I is more than eleven billion miles from the Sun, and is hopefully on the verge of crossing into interstellar space. Happy Birthday to the farthest man-made object from the Sun!

I love the Titan II rocket, because I have a very personal experience with it that I doubt many have had. At the Evergreen Air Museum, they have one set up vertically with no railing around it. I am sure many people have gone up and touched it. But I took it one step further. I crouched down, got on my back, stuck my head under the rocket nozzle of the first stage to have a peek. On my way out, I hit my head on a Titan II rocket.

That was, of course, after getting to sit in the captain’s seat of the Spruce Goose.

I highly recommend a visit to the Evergreen Air Museum, where one of the shuttles should have gone.
