Personal Log: The New Guy

Henrike Herschel, Personal Log. Stardate 12106.28…

“My father called me today to let me know about their search for the right person to take over their farm. You see, my parents are in their 80’s and my father isn’t able to physically do the things he used to. He kept insisting until he almost ended up breaking his back trying to lift something. I know it is hard on him, but it’s for his good. Stubborn man, he is, trying to keep doing his job. Typical German.” 

“Anyway, they found a young man by the name of Marcel who seems promising. He’s been working the farm for the past six months with no complaints. My parents seem to like his work, which is hard to do, since they both hold their livelihoods to high standards. I was originally supposed to take over the farm, but clearly that didn’t happen. (I went off and became a traveling space botanist instead!) It is a necessary thing to keep the farm running as it did for the many generations it has, so I have no qualms about it going to this capable young man.”

“My parents also mentioned that they were planning a vacation to Risa, since they had never been there before. (If I remember correctly, the Captain is Risan… hm. Maybe I should ask her what they should do there.) I think it will be good for them, since they hadn’t been out for at least 10 years. I love them, but good gosh they work too darn much. The only time I’ve seen them relax was after a football game and my dad spent a few hours reading. At least I didn’t get the workaholic tendency from them.”

“Oh! Before I forget, I brought up to Commander Wright about Taril and the plants and she took it very well. (I think.) I mentioned my idea to recreate the pea plant experiments of Gregor Mendel to teach him more about plant genetics. She said to add it to my official list of work duties, but joke’s on her- I was going to do it anyway! After consulting with his mom, of course. Don’t want to do anything without permission that’s outside of my… my… Scheiße! What’s the word? Ach scheiß drauf. Pause log.”
