Relief.

That was the sensation that washed over Commander Kate Harper as she exited the conference room. Colonel McKnight had chosen to help the pre-warp aliens out of their predicament, the alternative being certain death for them. All of this agonizing over his decision was brought on by a law, that until today, had seemed to be firmly carved upon stone tablets. Now, everything seemed to be up for interpretation, and Atlantis’s command staff had done just that.

She didn’t know what she would have done had McKnight chosen the alternative; it didn’t even seem possible that he would have, looking back on the conversation. Kate supposed that she would have went along with her orders, like a good officer, but thoughts of engineered accidental tractor beam power surges that were obviously malfunctionss still flashed through her mind. Fortunately, that point was moot.

Now, with her Captain’s approval, she could concentrate on solving the problem at hand.
