(21:04:33) CdrTKirr: Happy Halloween =)
(21:04:41) DoctorTav: Awoo.
(21:04:42) ColDougMcKnight: You too!
(21:05:05) VAdmBlackthorne: At least you didn't put an apostrophe between the E's.
(21:05:38) DoctorTav: Huh? Hallowe'en?
(21:05:49) VAdmBlackthorne: Yeah, it's a hipster thing.
(21:05:54) DoctorTav: It's not Hawai'i.
(21:06:08) DoctorTav: Oh. Well. Hipsters. Do they have anything worthwhile?
(21:06:09) VAdmBlackthorne: Supposed to be the original or something
(21:06:20) VAdmBlackthorne: To me it's just a nice "I'm a douchebag" sign
(21:06:27) DoctorTav: Exactly.
(21:07:11) VAdmBlackthorne: See: the editorial staff of Boing Boing
(21:07:37) DoctorTav: I don't know that I want to do that.
(21:08:09) VAdmBlackthorne: It actually is Hawai'i, but only if you're actually Hawaiian.
(21:08:18) DoctorTav: Right
(21:08:30) DoctorTav: I have a manager from Oahu who requires it.
(21:08:36) VAdmBlackthorne: You mean O'ahu :V
(21:08:38) LtAlexisWright: Hawai'ian?
(21:08:58) CdrTKirr: Sheesh.
(21:09:18) VAdmBlackthorne: They do pronounce it that way though. Hah-wai-ee
(21:09:27) CdrTKirr: And people think I'm wierd for writing Doctor Who fiction in British English
(21:09:53) LtAlexisWright: with colours and rumours and going on holiday
(21:09:58) VAdmBlackthorne: Makes perfect sense to me.
(21:11:52) VAdmBlackthorne: OK let's get going.

(21:12:52) VAdmBlackthorne has changed the topic to: With the ingots refined by the transporter algorithm, tonight our repairs should be completed and we can leave this strange star system behind.
(21:12:55) VAdmBlackthorne: Questions?
(21:13:46) CdrTKirr: Will we mysteriously find zombies aboard?
(21:13:56) DoctorTav: Zombie Ot?
(21:14:01) VAdmBlackthorne: No, finding them won't be mysterious at all.
(21:14:16) CdrTKirr: Ah all right then.

(21:17:14) VAdmBlackthorne: :: walks briskly onto the bridge from the ready room, quite bored of the gas giant out the window ::
(21:17:19) VAdmBlackthorne: :: looks around ::
(21:17:33) DoctorTav: :: is in Ten Forward, off in a corner, looking out at the star, mulling over those who were on his table when they lost their fight ::
(21:17:47) CdrTKirr: :: looks up from the center seat, her usual place lately ::
(21:18:06) VAdmBlackthorne: How are we looking? :: to T'Kirr ::
(21:18:56) LtKuari: :: sits on the floor next to Tav, just under eye level with him, looking where Tav's looking in quiet companionship ::
(21:19:27) CdrTKirr: Repairs are nearly complete. Just waiting for reports from a couple departments.
(21:19:30) LtAlexisWright: :: sitting down to lunch next to one of the windows in Ten Forward with Commander Harper ::
(21:20:21) VAdmBlackthorne: Excellent. I'm anxious to depart, as sure we all are.
(21:21:17) CdrHarper: :: sits down with a nice plate of bacon and eggs ::
(21:21:32) CdrTKirr: Indeed.
(21:21:58) LtAlexisWright: :Mmmm... waffles. :: noms ::
(21:22:28) CdrHarper: Mmmm... bacon. :: bacons ::
(21:23:11) CdrTKirr: (( Just realized we don't really have anyone to report in, so... ))
(21:23:56) DoctorTav: :: looks over at Kuari, sitting next to him :: So what's your take on all this?
(21:24:05) VAdmBlackthorne: (( It's fair. After tonight repairs are done no matter what anyway))
(21:24:30) LtAlexisWright: So, Commander, I'm curious.... you're a brilliant scientist and you seem to really love it... what made you decide on a career as a pilot instead?
(21:24:39) LtKuari: :: turns her head and blinks big eyes :: On what?
(21:25:05) LtAlexisWright: :: turns pink :: N-Not that there's anything wrong with being a pilot...
(21:25:33) CdrTKirr: (( Just wanted to give anyone a chance to tie up ))
(21:25:48) DoctorTav: :: spreads his hands :: Everything. All that's happened in the last several days. All the crewmembers that... that didn't make it.
(21:26:14) CdrHarper: :: laughs a little :: It is alright, I understood your meaning. But I am not brilliant at science, Alexis, merely adequate.
(21:27:38) LtAlexisWright: Adequate? I beg to differ, Commander... or.. may I call you Kathryn?
(21:27:49) CdrHarper: Certainly, when we are off duty.
(21:28:34) LtKuari: :: shifts her gaze to the table :: War is terrible and unnecessary, but unavoidable in this existence. We can choose to find quiet places away from it and hope, but that's not what this crew chose to do. It makes me sad, but it is not the fault of anyone left behind that they have died.
(21:29:22) LtAlexisWright: :: smiles :: Of course. As I was saying, Kathryn, your ability to grasp complex scientific concepts goes far beyond mere adequacy.
(21:29:31) LtKuari: :: darts her eyes back to Tav's face ::
(21:29:35) CdrHarper: I was quite bored as a science officer. My actual talent in that area is xenolinguistics, except English, apparently. That gets you assigned to Science, at which I am simply adequate.
(21:29:58) LtKuari: (( rofl @ English ))
(21:30:31) CdrHarper: But I thank you for the compliment.
(21:30:41) LtAlexisWright: So when did you discover your aptitude for piloting?
(21:30:54) CdrTKirr: :: receives a PADD from a passing crewman and peers at it ::
(21:31:21) CdrTKirr: :: which would have otherwise totally gone to Blackthorne except T'Kirr was reaching for it ::
(21:31:30) CdrHarper: When I qualified as a shuttlecraft pilot on the von Braun.
(21:31:40) VAdmBlackthorne: :: isn't sitting center anyway ::
(21:31:56) LtAlexisWright: Was it... love at first flight?
(21:32:21) DoctorTav: :: lowers his head and peers into his Synthehol, purses his lips, and then looks to Kuari, a bit of moisture in his eyes :: It's amazing. I've done all this before. It's why I chose Science over Medical this time around. You would think in two lifetimes of holding peoples' hand as they die, you would get used to it. You never do. It's moments like this when I just want to go back to Science.
(21:32:34) CdrHarper: :: doesn't get the joke :: Yes, but shuttlecrafts were it until Blackthorne noticed me.
(21:32:51) CdrTKirr: :: taps at her panel :: Repairs complete, all departments have reported in ready to get underway.
(21:33:19) LtAlexisWright: :: lets the small grin from her admittedly awful joke fall from her face and quirks an eyebrow instead :: Oh?
(21:34:23) CdrHarper: I was the beta shift CO on Atlantis before becoming CAG. Lots of long night shifts, but it was pleasant. Well, except when there were emergencies.
(21:35:43) LtKuari: :: peers out the windows again :: Rucara don't adventure much. Most stay home, within their tribes. Our numbers are too few to risk our lives. My family is one of the few to travel nearly this far.
(21:35:56) LtAlexisWright: Emergencies are rarely pleasant, in my experience.
(21:36:35) CdrHarper: After so long away from it, dipping back into science now and then is refreshing. You understand, yes?
(21:36:51) CdrHarper: :: watches Wright and bacons ::
(21:37:51) DoctorTav: :: gazes toward the gas giant, momentarily contemplating the safety systems in place so he doesn't fry his retinas :: What made your family choose to come to Starfleet territory?
(21:37:58) LtAlexisWright: :: solemn nod :: I do understand. Science has a way of getting into your blood - no matter what else you do, it remains a part of you. Right?
(21:38:13) VAdmBlackthorne: Excellent. I assume that we do not yet have quantum slipstream capability?
(21:38:49) CdrTKirr: Not yet, but are warp engines are fully functional.
(21:38:51) CdrHarper: Yes, exactly. It was boring to me at the time, when I was being forced to do it when I would rather be studying arcane languages. But now and then, it is good to get back to it.
(21:39:11) CdrHarper: When it is... not so much a job. When something catches special interest.
(21:40:05) LtAlexisWright: Well, as long as I am Science officer, you always have a place in my lab, Kathryn. :: smiles ::
(21:40:36) CdrHarper: :: returns the smile :: Thank you, Alexis. Perhaps you would like flying lessons then, yes?
(21:41:21) LtAlexisWright: :: eyes widening :: Do you really mean it?
(21:41:57) CdrHarper: Certainly, if you wish to learn, I would be happy to teach.
(21:43:02) VAdmBlackthorne: Recall any remaining ground personnel and inform the crew that we will be departing in 15 minutes. I will go say goodbye to our hosts.
(21:43:40) LtAlexisWright: :: grins, a little giddy :: I would very much like to learn! :: gazes off into the middle distance :: Imagine the experiments I could conduct if I could fly myself around...
(21:43:49) CdrTKirr: :: nods acknowledgment and contacts ATs ::
(21:44:49) DoctorTav: :: realizes Kuari has not answered his question and breaks his gaze into the cosmos to look quizzically at Kuari ::
(21:44:51) CdrHarper: Shuttlecraft are certainly a good start. They were for me. Then the lure becomes higher performance.
(21:45:43) VAdmBlackthorne: :: returns to the ready room and calls Ot ::
(21:45:59) LtAlexisWright: Many pilots just don't understand the needs of the scientist. "I'm not flying into that volcano," they say... or "You want WHAT kind of precision on these sensor placements?" or "Get that thing off my ship this instant!" ...they just don't understand.
(21:47:01) CdrHarper: Alternatively, many scientists do not understand the physics of piloting.
(21:47:59) VAdmBlackthorne: :: falls into a conversation with Ot and makes damn sure that he understands a few things ::
(21:49:15) LtAlexisWright: Granted. And some truly exceptional pilots have ways of *bending* the laws of physics, but I imagine it's not something one wants to do with any regularity.
(21:49:43) CdrHarper: In situations like that, you truly do feel as though you are one with your machine.
(21:50:34) CdrTKirr: (( I sure know what that feels like ))
(21:51:25) LtKuari: :: looks to Tav and smiles :: My parents heard stories of Voyager and the impact her crew had. They were inspired to find where they came from. You could say I've grown up under than inspiration, and that's why I'm here today.
(21:52:45) LtAlexisWright: Is it hard for you to transition between flying your fighter and piloting a ship as large as Atlantis?
(21:52:59) CdrHarper: Atlantis may be large, but she can move.
(21:53:50) LtAlexisWright: Well, I mean, have you ever had that sensation of bring one with your machine when at the helm of Atlantis?
(21:53:54) CdrHarper: While obviously not as maneuverable as a fighter, she is quite agile for her size. The transition is not so jarring.
(21:54:31) CdrHarper: Yes. When that happens, you do not even realize that what you are doing is extraordinary. It just seems like the correct action, so you do it.
(21:54:47) LtAlexisWright: :: nods thoughtfully ::
(21:55:00) CdrTKirr: (( You're describing my job, stop it lol ))
(21:55:37) CdrHarper: :: lowers her voice :: Blackthorne considers Atlantis to be his ship. But she is mine, I assure you.
(21:57:34) VAdmBlackthorne: :: makes damn sure that Ot understands that he is to ensure the losses to be worth it ::
(21:59:25) LtAlexisWright: :: somehow manages to swallow her last bite of waffle without choking on it :: Ha... :: takes a sip of water and a slow breath :: Wow. Yes. Piloting is a very intimate thing, I expect. You come to know the ship's every mood and nuance.
(22:00:12) CdrHarper: :: perks a corner of her mouth :: Quite.
(22:00:48) LtAlexisWright: :: lowers her voice as well :: He seems to jump at every chance he gets to fly her, you know.
(22:01:38) DoctorTav: :: widens his eyes :: Voyager? You followed Voyager here?
(22:01:50) CdrHarper: Oh I know. Did you know that my fighter was once his as well?
(22:02:27) LtAlexisWright: :: shakes her head, surprised :: I had no idea!
(22:02:49) CdrHarper: I was shot down and needed another plane. His was open. She's now mine too.
(22:03:03) LtAlexisWright: I wonder how he feels about that?
(22:03:21) CdrHarper: That is not really my concern either. :: lets out a grin :":
(22:05:10) LtAlexisWright: :: chuckles appreciatively :: You're an exceptional person, Kathryn Harper. :: grinning broadly ::
(22:05:32) CdrHarper: Perhaps I am!
(22:06:08) LtAlexisWright: Perhaps, she says! :: spears a strawberry with her fork and pops it into her mouth ::
(22:06:16) LtKuari: In a way, yes. And when I say I grew up with the inspiration, I mean more like...at that point in my life, home was all I knew. It was as if I matured into an explorer in those few years. When they said they were leaving Ruka, it wasn't even a question in my mind of whether I should stay or go with them.
(22:07:31) CdrHarper: And what of you, then? You do have quite the aptitude for science, much more than I ever did, that is for sure.
(22:10:30) VAdmBlackthorne: :: ends his conversation with Ot in a cordial fashion, with assurances that the dead would be remembered and that the victory was worth it ::
(22:10:40) LtAlexisWright: Ever since I was a child, I'm afraid. I was drawn to knowledge like a moth to a flame. My father was a geologist, and I spent every school holiday out in the field with him.
(22:12:18) CdrHarper: In that we are alike. My parents operated an aerial tourism business on Risa. I have always been able to fly.
(22:12:37) DoctorTav: :: glances out the window, looks back to Kuari and leans forward, his mind now off the dead, a wonderful reprieve :: How long did it take you to get here? Voyager got here decades earlier than she was supposed to because of a Borg slipstream.
(22:13:24) LtAlexisWright: Hah! Some people get tired of the stuff they did with their parents, but I guess you and I never did. :: grins ::
(22:14:15) CdrHarper: Indeed. I stopped for a while, but you did not.
(22:15:45) LtAlexisWright: Well, I have to admit that I've never really been good at anything else. The hard sciences are the only things that really make sense to me.
(22:16:36) LtAlexisWright: It can make for a rather lonely life sometimes.
(22:17:34) LtAlexisWright: So, I am trying to... expand my horizons.
(22:17:36) CdrHarper: Well, your mind has to work differently to make sense of such things when most people can not.
(22:17:59) LtAlexisWright: :: nods ::
(22:18:02) CdrHarper: Yes? How so?
(22:18:16) VAdmBlackthorne: :: returns to the bridge :: I believe I made my point.
(22:19:19) LtAlexisWright: Well, for one... :: picks at her plate nervously and blushing :: ...having lunch with you. Socializing like this is not something I do frequently, but that's something I want to change.
(22:20:03) CdrTKirr: :: eyebrow ::
(22:20:28) CdrHarper: As well you should, Alexis. I was once insular and could not fit in among my crewmates.
(22:21:00) LtKuari: The borg transwarp, yes. We tried to follow their trail, but it ended in a debris field. We found out later from their records that it was the hub they had used. Anyway, our ship is very small. It took us years, but... :: shakes her head :: I can remember, so much time spent in shuttlebays, catching rides in faster ships.
(22:21:02) LtAlexisWright: Oh? How did you change that?
(22:21:04) VAdmBlackthorne: I reminded Ot to make damn sure that the casualties were worth it.
(22:21:36) CdrHarper: :: smirks :: I transferred to a larger ship. Nova-classes are too small. But you do not need to take such drastic steps.
(22:22:03) LtKuari: :: smiles at Tav :: Starfleet loved our records. They're part of the reason for his position.
(22:22:27) LtAlexisWright: Do you have any steps you'd recommend, then?
(22:22:56) CdrTKirr: :: watches Blackthorne thoughtfully ::
(22:22:59) DoctorTav: :: nods slowly :: Catching rides... How did you find your way to Starfleet space? How did you even know where you wanted to go?
(22:23:21) CdrHarper: This is certainly a good one.
(22:23:27) LtAlexisWright: :: smiles ::
(22:23:52) VAdmBlackthorne: I believe his intent is good. If their new government stands, he'll at least have a shot at doing so.
(22:24:24) LtKuari: We knew the species was mostly human, and we knew the quadrant. We were always asking around, and when we got close enough, it was easy.
(22:25:04) LtAlexisWright: I really like Atlantis. I feel very welcome here, which is always a good feeling when you're a somewhat odd person like me.
(22:25:11) CdrTKirr: It may take quite some time to reform something like this. Generations, perhaps.
(22:25:15) CdrHarper: Odd people are the most interesting, yes?
(22:25:34) LtAlexisWright: Oh, yes, I'd like to think so.
(22:25:53) DoctorTav: And so, here you are. Your father an ambassador, your mother one of the top doctors at Medical. How did you choose to be a Marine?
(22:26:04) VAdmBlackthorne: We're carrying the history of his people, and he promised to contact us with progress updates. So we'll see.
(22:26:30) LtAlexisWright: You are an odd person, and I find you quite interesting! :: grin! ::
(22:27:38) CdrHarper: That beats being even.
(22:27:53) LtKuari: :: looks sympathetic :: The same reason you're drawn more than once to being a doctor. To protect. Playing to my strengths, as they say.
(22:27:56) CdrHarper: :: tries to make an English joke, with deadpan delivery ::
(22:28:25) LtAlexisWright: :: tilts her head to the side, wearing a quizzical expression ::
(22:28:56) CdrHarper: :: fails ::
(22:29:13) LtAlexisWright: You lost me there. What were you trying to express?
(22:29:28) DoctorTav: :: echoes Kuari :: To protect. A very good way of putting it. :: raises his glass of Synthehol :: To protecting those around us! ... Even when we don't do a great job at it. :: tilts his head back and finishes the Synthehol ::
(22:29:51) CdrHarper: I was attempting to make a math joke. As I said, English and I do not get along.
(22:30:59) LtAlexisWright: OH! I get it now. And I find your struggles with English idioms and humor to be quite endearing, actually.
(22:31:58) CdrHarper: I find them to be embarrassing and frustrating. Of all the languages, why must English be so confounding?
(22:32:00) LtKuari: :: just nods decisively, as she doesn't have a drink ::
(22:32:37) LtAlexisWright: Before we became a spacefaring race, English was a notoriously difficult language for people on our own planet to master.
(22:33:03) LtAlexisWright: But I'm happy to help you any time if you want, you don't have to be embarrassed with me.
(22:33:41) CdrHarper: After this time, I do not think I will ever grasp such a ridiculous language, but the sentiment is appreciated.
(22:33:43) DoctorTav: :: realizes he doesn't really like how the Synthehol feels and shakes off the effects and returns to staring out the window and sighs, deciding he would rather talk about Kuari than the dead :: Do you ever plan to go back to your homeworld?
(22:33:47) CdrHarper: (this much time)
(22:34:48) LtAlexisWright: Well, if you ever need help with a particular idiom or joke or something, you know where to find me.
(22:34:56) CdrHarper: Thank you, Alexis. :: smiles ::
(22:35:08) LtAlexisWright: :: smiles back ::
(22:35:08) VAdmBlackthorne: (FIVE MINUTES!)
(22:35:16) VAdmBlackthorne: :: sits down at the helm and plots a course to somewhere ::
(22:35:54) CdrHarper: :: finishes the last of her bacon and eggs ::
(22:35:56) LtAlexisWright: I'd very much like to do this again sometime, Kathryn, if you're willing? Perhaps we could invite the Doctor and make it a threesome?
(22:36:29) LtKuari: :: looks pensive :: I think about home, but I don't have plans right now. It's very far away. It's lucky we got here as fast as we did, and through such dangerous territory. I don't know...if I'll survive long enough to visit.
(22:37:22) DoctorTav: :: blinks, a bit afraid to ask the next question :: What is the average lifespan of a Rucara?
(22:38:10) CdrHarper: Certainly! Also, what else do you like to do for fun? I play tennis, among other holographic pursuits.
(22:38:42) VAdmBlackthorne: Are we all aboard and ready to depart?
(22:39:26) LtAlexisWright: I play a couple of musical instruments, and I enjoy detective stories in the holodeck, but I'm open to trying almost anything new.
(22:39:51) CdrHarper: Oh, music? I play the flute. Terran flute, that is, out of convenience.
(22:40:20) LtKuari: :: grins :: Oh I don't mean by natural death. We just...tend to get into trouble a lot, you know?
(22:40:58) CdrTKirr: All aboard, ready for departure.
(22:41:10) DoctorTav: What kind of trouble are you talking about?
(22:41:12) LtAlexisWright: I play violin and cello.. I believe there are some lovely pieces written for violin or cello and flute!
(22:41:30) LtKuari: :: squints at Tav :: Ship almost blowing up kind of trouble...?
(22:41:49) DoctorTav: :: smiles for the first time in days ::
(22:41:52) CdrHarper: That we should certainly try. Also, my friends call me Kate.
(22:42:06) VAdmBlackthorne: Here we go. :: punches it it, and Atlantis warps off into the black ::
(22:42:25) LtAlexisWright: Kate. You may call me Lexy, if you wish. :: smiles ::
(22:42:36) LtKuari: :: looks to the windows and watches the stars fly by ::
(22:42:56) LtAlexisWright: Ah, we're underway!
(22:42:59) DoctorTav: :: sees the warp speed out the windows and turns to look, the smile still on his face ::
(22:43:07) CdrHarper: Blackthorne is at the helm.
(22:43:39) LtAlexisWright: :: grins and quirks a brow at Kate :: Are you gonna let him manhandle your baby like this?
(22:44:18) CdrHarper: For now. I have to let him think the ship is his.
(22:44:29) LtAlexisWright: :: giggles ::
(22:44:55) VAdmBlackthorne: PAUSE SIM
(22:44:59) VAdmBlackthorne: PAUSE SIM
(22:45:00) VAdmBlackthorne: PAUSE SIM
(22:45:02) LtAlexisWright: :: || ::
(22:45:09) CdrTKirr: :: pauses ::
(22:45:16) DoctorTav: :: pauses, staring into the oncoming stars that also strangely pause ::
(22:45:18) LtKuari: :: paws ::
(22:45:36) LtAlexisWright: There was still no answer on the average Rucaran lifespan
(22:45:43) LtAlexisWright: DISAPPOINTING
(22:46:00) DoctorTav: I don't think she actually knows.
(22:46:01) VAdmBlackthorne: Nice sim, lots of good interactions.
(22:46:02) LtKuari: Mysterious, ain't it...?
(22:46:12) DoctorTav: Nope, she doesn't know.
