(20:52:06) ChanServ has changed the topic to: The senior staff hopes to find the Horathians a new home, so that Veshin will cease his failing attempts at terraforming worlds with existing life. On another front, we're continuing to try to understand what attacked us on the first planet. The senior staff is currently assembling in the conference room.

(20:56:11) VAdmBlackthorne: Hiya
(20:56:13) DoctorTav: Good evening
(20:56:25) DoctorTav: Log coming in about three minutes. I am working on the end.
(20:57:11) VAdmBlackthorne: Woohoo!

(20:58:51) VAdmBlackthorne: Hiya
(20:59:11) CdrTKirr: Hey.
(20:59:26) ColDougMcKnight: Evening.
(20:59:37) DoctorTav: Proofread. Back in a few.
(21:00:51) CdrTKirr: Speaking of reading, have you read "Wrong Star", Mike?
(21:01:00) ColDougMcKnight: After having put off playing it for some time, I just finished Mass Effect 3 last night.
(21:01:00) ColDougMcKnight: And Christ, it's all the kick in the balls people said.
(21:01:06) LtJGAlexisWright [Mibbit@w-11-876-382-46.hsd1.wa.comcast.net] entered the room.
(21:01:17) ColDougMcKnight: I have.
(21:01:31) CdrTKirr: Coool eventually I'll play that series -_-
(21:01:36) VAdmBlackthorne: Did you have the extended cut?
(21:01:53) CdrTKirr: Anyway, yes, I really like that log, wanted to ask
(21:02:38) ColDougMcKnight: It WAS the extended cut, which I understand to be a pretty vast improvement.
(21:03:06) ColDougMcKnight: And yes, in fairness, it's a happy ending, if you don't inexplicably choose the "Nah." option...for everyone else.
(21:03:53) VAdmBlackthorne: It was really annoying that Bioware clearly wanted you to pick synthesis and just trust the stupid star-child after spending 3 games out to destroy Reapers.
(21:04:03) VAdmBlackthorne: (Which is exactly what I did, so my Shep lived.) :colbert:
(21:04:26) ColDougMcKnight: Maybe I'm asking for too much. Buty I just feel like Shepard deserved a happy ending.
(21:04:29) VAdmBlackthorne: Death to Reapers (sorry EDI, you were cool, but I'm sure I have a backup copy)
(21:04:52) ColDougMcKnight: And now, it seems that only my dickhead gets to live.
(21:05:07) VAdmBlackthorne: You can live as paragon
(21:05:18) VAdmBlackthorne: Just need high war readiness and choose Destroy
(21:05:25) ColDougMcKnight: Oh, I know. But not in a way that feels very paragon.
(21:05:32) CdrTKirr: Oh Wright, hi, didn't see you come in.
(21:05:36) ColDougMcKnight: Destroying EDI is one thing. I like her, but I could do it.
(21:06:08) LtJGAlexisWright: Allos
(21:06:08) ColDougMcKnight: It's destroying the Geth, AFTER I do all this to makwe a peace with them a reality, and saying at every turn that they have as much right to live as anybody else.
(21:06:11) VAdmBlackthorne: Sucks about the geth too since I befriended them.
(21:06:18) LtJGAlexisWright: omg spoilers
(21:06:30) VAdmBlackthorne: But if it's the entire geth race or Shepard, guess who dies? :mad:
(21:07:03) LtJGAlexisWright: ProTip: Covering my ears and yelling LALALA doesn't protect me against spoilers on IRC.
(21:07:04) ColDougMcKnight: Oh, um...right. Amnesia dust?
(21:08:08) LtJGAlexisWright: :: poof :: amnesia dust in my face!
(21:08:47) CdrTKirr: Make sure you breathe it in.
(21:09:42) LtLedaHarper [Talaith@10-13-84-255.hlrn.qwest.net] entered the room.
(21:09:42) LtJGAlexisWright: This stuff doesn't show up on drug tests, right?
(21:09:47) LtJGAlexisWright: :: suspicious ::
(21:10:35) VAdmBlackthorne: Welcome back, Leda!
(21:11:55) LtLedaHarper: Admiral twisted my arm. Rat bastard.
(21:12:16) LtJGAlexisWright: He can be incredibly persuasive.
(21:12:27) VAdmBlackthorne: I have no idea what you're talking about.
(21:12:29) darko [Mibbit@90-43-96-75.res.bhn.net] entered the room.
(21:12:51) CdrTKirr: My brother's gonna watch the sim tonight. ^_^
(21:12:59) VAdmBlackthorne: Oh cool :)
(21:13:05) LtJGAlexisWright: Hello, T'Kirr's brother
(21:13:19) darko: hey all! =D
(21:13:36) CdrTKirr: We're twins, for those that don't know
(21:13:43) LtJGAlexisWright: Oooo, fancy
(21:14:21) VAdmBlackthorne: They definitely look like it too. :)
(21:14:55) VAdmBlackthorne: :: produces the Ancient Whistle of Bloody Eardrums +5 :: TWEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEET!
(21:15:11) darko: Yup :) It's obvious when we're side by side

(21:21:00) CdrTKirr: First of all, Tav's about to post a log. While we're getting started, take a peek to see where he's launching off from.
(21:21:09) CdrTKirr: Sorry for the delay, I just had to peek at it myself. =X
(21:21:30) LtJGAlexisWright: Naughty Tav and his 11th hour log posts
(21:21:36) CdrTKirr has changed the topic to: Science and Medical is still doing its thing to find the Horathians a home to keep them from skinning planets.
(21:22:00) CdrTKirr: Any questions as to where to start?
(21:22:47) DoctorTav: I just need to put some needles into some Horathians
(21:23:00) CdrTKirr: 'Kay. Aaaaand
(21:23:01) CdrTKirr: BEGIN SIM
(21:23:02) CdrTKirr: BEGIN SIM
(21:23:03) CdrTKirr: BEGIN SIM
(21:23:42) VAdmBlackthorne: :: in the ready room, reading the latest Third Fleet updates ::
(21:23:57) CdrTKirr: :: on the Bridge, keeping Veshin at bay any time he calls ::
(21:24:05) CdrHarper [Mibbit@vmwi-298-5-24-109.rcmdva.fios.verizon.net] entered the room.
(21:24:55) CdrHarper: :: at Helm, dutifully monitoring Atlantis's orbit along with their "companion" ::
(21:26:05) LtJGAlexisWright: (( Nice, Tav, no pressure :P ))
(21:27:00) CdrHarper: :: and of course monitoring all the systems displayed on Atlantis's de facto dashboard ::
(21:27:12) VAdmBlackthorne: :: notes that Discovery is just about ready to test her slipstream drive ::
(21:27:30) DoctorTav: :: still in Holodeck 3, awaits the arrival of Lt. Wright
(21:30:03) LtJGAlexisWright: :: nearly running down the hall, skids to a stop in front of the Holodeck doors and waits impatiently for them to swish open, then charges in and almost collides with a hapless surgical nurse. Taking a breath and collecting herself, she looks around the room, spots Tav, and makes a beeline for him :: Okay, I'm going to need to see this.
(21:33:01) ColDougMcKnight: ::At tactical, waiting for something to happen. But he's also multi-tasking. He's reading a letter from Gerard in which his friend gives him regular updates on the evolving situation in the newly autonamous Hinterlands, and he periodically glares down at his arm, willing the muscle to grow back and get rid of the synthetic crap faster. ::
(21:33:37) CdrHarper: :: leans back in her chair, everything reading nominal ::
(21:34:29) DoctorTav: :: turns to Wright :: Yes you are. :: points to the Horathian, now reversed to several days after his first breaths of air, sitting up on the surgical bed, not programmed to do anything as he has absolutely no personality programmed into him, but he is biologically functioning :: Meet my holo-Horathian. He is based on the real Horathian physiology. He has been genetically modified, and he is breathing oxygen. Basically, I need to test this on
(21:34:40) DoctorTav: a real, living Horathian, but I think we can get them breathing oxygen, which will make their plight much, much easier to fix.
(21:34:46) CaptainVeshin [TKirr@90-43-96-75.res.bhn.net] entered the room.
(21:36:25) CdrHarper: How is the arm, Colonel?
(21:37:44) ColDougMcKnight: It works. I'll just feel better when it's all me again.
(21:38:05) CdrHarper: I know the feeling.
(21:39:00) ColDougMcKnight: :: Frowns:: I guess you would. Sorry.
(21:39:54) CdrHarper: There is no need to apologize. What I meant was that I understand.
(21:40:12) LtJGAlexisWright: :: scrolls through the data on her PADD :: Well, I'll be damned. That's pretty amazing work, Doc. :: keeps scrolling, nods appreciatively, then after a few moments looks up to meet Tav's eye with a serious expression on her face :: But don't get too smug yet. Breathing is important, but it's not everything.
(21:43:04) DoctorTav: :: nods :: Agreed. However, at this point I am not entirely sure that this will work. I'll need a volunteer. Also, I haven't yet figured out what they will need to eat, assuming it works.
(21:43:56) CdrTKirr: :: follows their conversation ::
(21:45:28) CdrTKirr: ACTION> Veshin's ship hails Atlantis.
(21:45:41) CdrHarper: Incoming hail, Commander.
(21:46:24) LtJGAlexisWright: Not just eating, but the actual act of digestion. Also, does the change have an effect on brain function? Personality? Does it increase or decrease their rate of cellular decay and aging? Does the process work equally on a variety of Horathians regardless of age, gender, and health? What about reproduction? Effects of low-grav on everything as well?
(21:46:37) CdrTKirr: On screen.
(21:47:00) CdrHarper: :: puts it up ::
(21:47:42) CaptainVeshin: :: appears looking impatient and bored, and squints at T'Kirr :: Commander.
(21:48:06) CdrTKirr: Captain.
(21:48:21) LtJGAlexisWright: The way I see it, you've only been testing against a single set of variables, and are nowhere near prepared to try this on a living being. Sorry, Doc, but ethics are not on your side here.
(21:49:11) DoctorTav: :: tilts his head in thought :: Reproduction should work similarly to however it is now, and I am not terribly worried about the effects of gravity. They can learn to live in a lower gravity environment, just as humans did when colonizing your moon and Mars, and Trills on Zaykan. Aging appears in the simulations to be the same, and the effects on the brain should be minimal.
(21:50:16) CaptainVeshin: :: crosses his arms, attempting to appear casual but failing :: I'm curious, is Admiral Blackthorne ever on the Bridge? He seems indisposed quite often.
(21:50:47) CdrTKirr: :: sighs subtly in irritation :: Is there something you want, Captain?
(21:51:12) LtJGAlexisWright: See, the "should be" worries me. Your data doesn't support your assertions, Tav. ::looks at the doctor anxiously, using his name in hopes of appealing to him on a personal level::
(21:52:01) VAdmBlackthorne: :: gets a "wife is annoyed" vibe, not even telepathically ::
(21:53:07) CaptainVeshin: :: drops his arms :: I want to know how long you intend to keep us here. My people won't wait here forever. You've said you're willing to help us, but we've only so much patience. If you can't, then we need to move on.
(21:55:09) ColDougMcKnight: :: Smiles malevolently. ::
(21:55:14) DoctorTav: I have the computer running several simulations, with minor biological differences as indicated by the medical data they sent over. In a few minutes, I will have a few hundred charts worth of simulations to go on. I have also upgraded the simulations for the digestive, cognitive and reproductive changes. However, when it is all said and done, we will still need to test it on a real Horathian, or perhaps if they have a creature they use for bio
(21:55:29) DoctorTav: biological testing, before we can know anything for sure.
(21:55:32) CdrTKirr: Our medical and science teams are working together to find a solution. As I'm sure your scientists can tell you, research and experimentation take time. You'll have to be patient a little while longer.
(21:55:46) CdrHarper: :: stares daggers at the screen ::
(21:58:51) CaptainVeshin: :: grimaces, clearly not wanting to hear this, and crosses his arms again and huffs :: Can I at least ask what it is you're trying to do? Long range scans for planets? Putting our terraforming technology to shame? What?
(21:58:52) LtJGAlexisWright: :: shrugs meekly at the doctor :: I don't really like it, but I don't have any better ideas. How can I help?
(21:59:40) DoctorTav: The thing I DO know for sure is this: They were definitely genetically modified sometime in the not-so-distant past, compared to the overall history of their planet. I have unravelled exactly what was done to them to make them scientifically impossible, and I have a way of undoing it. Everything else can be figured out later, so long as we know they will survive and be able to evolve as they should.
(22:00:33) DoctorTav: :: thinks about Wright's question :: Help me to get through the data that is coming in. Let's line it up, see what variances the computer models are able to predict that we will or may need to address.
(22:01:05) DoctorTav: I need to see exactly what we need to replicate for our Sickbay to be able to handle the care of a Horathian.
(22:02:10) LtJGAlexisWright: Okay. I can do that. Shall we get to work?
(22:03:00) DoctorTav: Yes. Also, let's contact the Bridge, and have them see if any Horathians would be willing to volunteer for testing, assuming the models show that actual Horathian testing is advisable.
(22:04:05) LtJGAlexisWright: Right.
(22:04:20) CdrTKirr: :: standing, clasps her hands patiently behind her and straightens a little :: We have several options we are considering. When we have a plan that shows promise, we will contact you. Until then, I know you have a great deal of data from the last three planets. Your scientists are no doubt hard at work analyzing the information. I'm interested in hearing from them if they learn anything. Perhaps you would find it...beneficial to occupy yourself
(22:04:31) CdrTKirr: with assisting them.
(22:07:01) DoctorTav: :: responds when the computer chimes that the tests are done. After looking at the data, he motions to Wright to come over :: This is promising.
(22:07:08) VAdmBlackthorne: (very Vulcan way of saying Go Fuck Yourself)
(22:07:20) CaptainVeshin: :: looks a little flushed, his mouth pinched into a line, and ends the comm ::
(22:07:53) LtJGAlexisWright: :: comes over, peering at the screen :: What are we looking at?
(22:07:58) CdrTKirr: :: looks to McKnight and seats herself ::
(22:08:32) CdrHarper: :: looks back to the console once the viewer goes dark ::
(22:11:13) ColDougMcKnight: If he tries to bolt, should I just assume I have standing orders to blast his engines?
(22:12:54) CdrTKirr: If a tractor beam doesn't deter them, then yes. We can't risk their escape.
(22:13:03) DoctorTav: :: scans the data and begins parsing what he sees into a few data streams :: It seems here that the changes will have only inconvenient effects on their biological functions. Everything that they will need to change, they should be able to figure out. For the things they can't, we can have a team from Starfleet Medical help them adjust. Out of a test group of 300,000 simulations there were three fatalities.
(22:14:07) LtJGAlexisWright: ::: frowns :: Good results, but can we see what the cause of those three fatalities were?
(22:16:41) DoctorTav: I am looking that up now. :: brings up the results :: It appears that all three deaths were highly geriatric. Did I mention I used the widest possible paramaters for my simulations?
(22:18:27) LtJGAlexisWright: :: shrugs :: Okay, I'm becoming more convinced.
(22:20:36) DoctorTav: I think the next step would be to do some testing on some Horathian volunteers. We'll work out the kinks on the stronger volunteers, and perhaps people of a certain age are too old to undergo this... transformation... Assuming it works.
(22:22:07) LtJGAlexisWright: What about trying just tissue samples first?
(22:24:42) DoctorTav: MAGIC EDIT > I think the next step would be to do some testing on some Horathian animals if they have them. That will allow us to see how our tests work with a genome similar to theirs. It appears they have an animal they use for food that should work, the Griok. It's about five kilograms.
(22:25:17) LtJGAlexisWright: Okay, but after the tissue samples, right?
(22:26:03) DoctorTav: :: shakes his head :: The changes are systemic. Just tissue samples won't give us a proper picture of what is going on.
(22:27:09) CdrTKirr: (( I'm reminded of Lorillian children being weaned off methyloxide ))
(22:27:57) DoctorTav: (( That gas would have been much simpler to use than liquid argon ))
(22:28:10) LtJGAlexisWright: :: shifts her feet, obviously uncomfortable with testing something so theoretical on a living being :: Okay, I understand. I'll prep the surgical suite for the Griok.
(22:28:53) DoctorTav: :: nods :: Very good. Let's get back to our Sickbay, and I'll work on procuring the griok.
(22:29:26) DoctorTav: :: begins walking toward the exit :: Computer, end program.
(22:30:02) DoctorTav: COMPUTER> :: chirps, ends the program and opens the exit ::
(22:30:13) LtJGAlexisWright: :: quickly snatches her real PADD before the countertop dematerializes :: Right behind you.
(22:30:21) DoctorTav: +BRIDGE+ Tav to the Bridge
(22:31:05) CdrTKirr: :: pleased to hear Tav's voice :: +Go ahead, Doctor.
(22:31:07) CdrTKirr: +
(22:32:23) DoctorTav: +T'Kirr+ Commander, we have made some interesting progress. Could you see if the Horathians have a griok that I could borrow, and if testing goes badly, have? I have a possible solution to many of their problems.
(22:33:04) CdrHarper: :: looks up at the comm ::
(22:33:34) CdrTKirr: :: pauses :: Griok?
(22:34:24) DoctorTav: +T'Kirr+ :: nods without thinking :: It's an animal they eat, and it's close enough genetically, sort of like rats and humans. I need one.
(22:35:00) CdrTKirr: :: perks eyebrow :: I'll ask.
(22:35:10) CdrTKirr: Hail Veshin.
(22:35:41) CdrHarper: Aye Commander. :: sends out the hail ::
(22:36:02) CdrHarper: They are answering. :: puts it on screen ::
(22:36:53) CaptainVeshin: :: looks surprised ::
(22:37:25) CdrTKirr: Do you have a "griok", Captain?
(22:37:39) CaptainVeshin: :: frowns :: Why?
(22:37:58) CdrTKirr: Science. My doctor needs one.
(22:38:12) VAdmBlackthorne: (FOR SCIENCE!)
(22:38:30) DoctorTav: (( I'm such a monster ))
(22:38:39) LtJGAlexisWright: (Brilliant!)
(22:38:46) CaptainVeshin: :: blinks a moment, then shrugs :: What's one more meal. Where do you want it?
(22:39:13) CdrTKirr: Send the coordinates, and I'll have it transported over.
(22:42:55) CdrTKirr: (Sorry RL moment)
(22:43:13) CaptainVeshin: Right. :: cuts comm and sends coords to Ops ::
(22:43:34) CdrTKirr: (2min warning)

(22:45:18) DoctorTav: .
(22:45:49) CdrTKirr: +Tav+ Do you have a recepticle for the griok? We are standing by to transport.
(22:46:17) CdrHarper: (That sounds hilarious)
(22:46:37) DoctorTav: +T'Kirr+ Give me about thirty seconds. I have a tank that I can use. I'll put it up in the biolab. Stand by.
(22:47:28) DoctorTav: :: rushes around Sickbay, finds the tank, and takes it next door into the lab. :: +T'Kirr+ Ready for transport. Please, don't miss.
(22:47:44) CdrTKirr: Harper, collect both sets of coordinates and feed them to the transporter room. Let's get ourselves a griok.

(22:48:39) LtJGAlexisWright: Your pause is too widely spaced omg.
(22:48:42) CdrTKirr: Then we move on. o_o
(22:49:19) DoctorTav: After all the real estate studying, writing a log, and then sim, I am pretty well wasted. Yay for kava.
(22:49:54) DoctorTav: And yay for bed.
(22:51:17) DoctorTav: I will get that written, and I'll send it off to Wright with a couple days to spare so I don't just dump it on her ten minutes after Sim was supposed to start.
(22:51:24) VAdmBlackthorne: Woooooohoooo!
(22:51:28) VAdmBlackthorne: Two logs in a week omg!
