(20:55:24) The topic for #ussatlantis is: After chasing a rogue vessel appearing to be responsible for radically altering at least three planet surfaces to the point of genocide, Atlantis follows Captain Veshin's ship back to the third and latest planet, which is currently undergoing its metamorphosis.

(21:10:29) CdrTKirr has changed the topic to: Captain Veshin has sent information about their species, the Horathians, and their home planet to the Atlantis for Science and Medical to study. The senior staff hopes to find a new home for them, so that Veshin will cease his failing attempts at terraforming worlds with existing life. On another front, we're continuing to try to understand what attacked us on the first planet.
(21:10:54) CdrTKirr: Questions?
(21:11:56) CdrTKirr: I believe, as a reminder, that the Horathians were said to be at least similar to tellurian-based lifeforms, that they breathe a liquid argon atmosphere, and their gravity is much stronger than ours.
(21:12:14) CdrTKirr: As a reminder. From two weeks ago. ^_~

(21:15:59) LtCmdrBusard: (WB)
(21:16:00) CdrTKirr: (WB)
(21:16:08) VAdmBlackthorne: (No idea what that was)
(21:16:42) CdrTKirr: ::on the Bridge, going over older files, attempting to make sense of their early scans of the first planet in light of their latest information ::
(21:17:11) LtJGAlexisWright: So let's go through this again. The root of our logical problem here is how a planet that dense got into that orbit around that star. Yes?
(21:18:07) ColDougMcKnight: :: Stands a silent watch at tactical, just waiting for that ship to try rabbiting. ::
(21:18:24) DoctorTav: :: nods :: That's part of it, yes. It doesn't belong there, or on that trajectory.
(21:20:15) LtJGAlexisWright: So maybe we need to be thinking about alternative ways that it could have gotten there. We've ruled out forming with the solar system, orbiting as a captured object, being knocked off-course by an enormous impact, and pretty much every other natural means of arriving in that decaying orbit.
(21:20:36) DoctorTav: Which leaves...
(21:21:21) CdrTKirr: :: looks to Tac :: Colonel, what is our status on weapon modifications against the phantasms?
(21:21:23) LtJGAlexisWright: So I'm thinking... either someone put it there, or someone changed something that was already there. The only option is external intervention. :: throws her PADD down on the desk in frustration ::
(21:22:24) ColDougMcKnight: Ready in all but live testing. In other words, your guess is as good as mine.
(21:23:09) CdrTKirr: :: nods and stands, heading for the RR :: You have the Bridge.
(21:23:15) CdrTKirr: :: chimes ::
(21:23:43) VAdmBlackthorne: Come in. :: looks up, knowing who is there ::
(21:24:24) LtJGAlexisWright: :: stands and paces, running her hands through her hair :: Is intelligent design really the only option left to consider, Tav? Because maybe we should forget all the natural stuff and look at this from another angle entirely.
(21:25:07) DoctorTav: :: looks at the PADD now on the desk :: But who has enough power to start that planet on such a course? Or more, who could have started that course enough years ago to have the planet falling into the sun now? The fact that they have a whole history would tend to suggest that this happened a very long time ago. However, their distance from their star is such that, if the planet has not recently been knocked off course, then it has to have been
(21:25:24) DoctorTav: ... in its planetary temperate orbit long enough for the Horathians to evolve, and long enough ago that they would not remember such a catastrophic event.
(21:25:39) CdrTKirr: :: enters, waiting for the doors to close, noticing which way Blackthorne was facing before turning towards her and looks out the window herself ::
(21:27:24) VAdmBlackthorne: This has to stop, one way or another.
(21:27:52) DoctorTav: :: follows Wright with his eyes :: I think that is exactly what I am saying. There is no natural way that this planet should be supporting life. Going back in time, the planet has only been the right distance from its star to support life for the last thousand years or so. Obviously, the Horathians have been around longer than that.
(21:28:17) LtJGAlexisWright: :: shakes her head :: I think we are going to have to assume that SOMEONE created this planet and the lifeforms that apparently evolved from it. And clearly, "someone" is no longer in the picture, or otherwise is not acting to stop Horath's plunge starward.
(21:29:21) LtJGAlexisWright: Is it possible that whoever put the planet there could have been making periodic course corrections to allow for evolution?
(21:29:26) DoctorTav: That, or they came in and changed it at some point in the last two thousand years. :: throws up his hands :: Maybe they decided it would be fun to increase the density or something/
(21:29:27) DoctorTav: .
(21:29:55) LtJGAlexisWright: I feel like they've increased the density of my brain.
(21:30:21) DoctorTav: Are you suggesting that somehow someone has redirected the orbital plath of an entire planet? And an extremely dense, heavy one at that?
(21:31:00) CdrTKirr: :: clasps her hands behind her :: We need more data. The surface of this planet is still too chaotic to support a landing party. The one we visited before this one would probably be stable enough.
(21:31:19) LtJGAlexisWright: :: stops pacing and sits down :: Well, if they could make such an impossible planet exist in the first place, who knows what else they could do?
(21:31:41) EnsUrist: (( OK I'm back from traffic wars)
(21:31:47) CdrTKirr: There is, of course, a risk of being attacked. We would...have an "opportunity" to test our weapon modifications if that were to happen.
(21:31:54) LtJGAlexisWright: Do we have any historical or religious texts that we can look back on?
(21:32:07) DoctorTav: Or... :: leans back in his chair :: What if they took a normal planet, and made it impossible?
(21:32:23) VAdmBlackthorne: I don't think leaving this ship would be a good idea, and I doubt they would come with us.
(21:32:35) DoctorTav: :: thinks a moment about what Wright has just said :: That would be a good thing to check.
(21:32:36) LtCmdrBusard: (Sorry, spacey)
(21:32:49) DoctorTav: +Bridge+ Sickbay to the Bridge.
(21:33:01) LtJGAlexisWright: Even so, it wouldn't have been in the temperate zone long enough and a thousand years isn't enough time for that kind of evolutionary adaptation.
(21:33:05) CdrTKirr: (Welcome, Urist)
(21:33:38) LtJGAlexisWright: Unless their biological lifecycle is extremely protracted.
(21:33:52) LtCmdrBusard: :: Stands back for a minute from the panels she's been working on in Engineering. The slipstream drive was stable, but the connections still weren't as clean as she'd like. She sat for a minute, looking at the work that had been done.:: Damn.
(21:34:43) LtJGAlexisWright: You did just hail the Bridge, right?
(21:35:15) DoctorTav: I did. Let's try this. +Blackthorne+ Sickbay to Admiral Blackthorne.
(21:35:23) CdrHarper: +Tav+ Bridge here.
(21:35:42) LtJGAlexisWright: (( o snap ))
(21:36:30) CdrHarper: +Tav+ Transferring you to the Admiral.
(21:36:34) CdrHarper: :: routes the call ::
(21:36:42) VAdmBlackthorne: +Tav+ Blackthorne here.
(21:37:59) ColDougMcKnight: (Sorry myself. I was checking on some water I'm boiling.)
(21:38:28) DoctorTav: +Harper+ Commander. Somewhat strange request for you: Did Veshin happen to :: call gets transferred in the middle of his thought :: Uh, Admiral. As I was telling Commander Harper, I have a strange request: Did Captain Veshin happen to send us any data on his planet's, uh, religious beliefs or history? Wright and I are attempting to find some clues in the situation of Horath.
(21:38:33) VAdmBlackthorne: ( :stare: )
(21:39:06) VAdmBlackthorne: +Tav+ That would actually have been a better question for Commander Harper, but I believe she sent you everything we have.
(21:39:45) DoctorTav: +Blackthorne+ Would you care to route me back to the Bridge, then? I'd be happy to ask her.
(21:40:20) DoctorTav: Sir.
(21:41:11) VAdmBlackthorne: +Tav+ :: smirks :: Sure, Doc, I'm a great Operator.
(21:41:17) VAdmBlackthorne: :: sends the call to the bridge ::
(21:41:23) LtJGAlexisWright: :: busies herself by picking up her PADD and starting to page through more of the data that was sent over, distancing herself from the good Doctor
(21:41:37) CdrHarper: +Tav+ Harper here.
(21:42:17) DoctorTav: +Bridge+ Commander Harper. It seems you WERE the person I would want to talk to after all. I was wondering if Captain Veshin might have sent over his planet's history or religious beliefs.
(21:42:51) DoctorTav: (How do you keep your Trill doctor busy for hours? Transfer him to the Admiral to find out.)
(21:43:01) DoctorTav: How do you keep your Trill doctor busy for hours? Transfer him back to the Bridge to find out.)
(21:43:07) CdrHarper: +Tav+ Negative, Doctor.
(21:43:55) DoctorTav: +Harper+ The next time you talk to him, would you mind asking? And it would be a good idea if that could be sooner than later.
(21:45:05) CdrHarper: +Tav+ I will send over a request.
(21:45:07) LtCmdrBusard: (Because we intend to kill them all and we want to give them a good funeral :-P)
(21:45:14) CdrHarper: :: contacts Veshin's ship ::
(21:45:36) CaptainVeshin: :: pops up on the screen, looking hopeful :: Yes?
(21:48:04) CdrHarper: Captain. :: courteously, but not horribly politely :: We need all the historical and religious information on your culture that you have.
(21:49:19) LtCmdrBusard: :: After going over the latest readings:: Urist, I'd like you to do some calibrations. The drive is working, but it looks like the power that's being routed to it isn't all getting there.
(21:49:58) CaptainVeshin: :: frowns in incredulation :: Whatever for? You want to know where we set out the Taara leaves for season's blessings? :: sighs and shakes his head :: I did agree to send you our entire library. I don't know why I didn't just do it in the first place.
(21:50:31) CdrHarper: Thank you, Captain. :: inclines her head in a dispassionate thanks ::
(21:51:07) CaptainVeshin: :: makes a face and punches the comm closed, the requested information arriving shortly thereafter ::
(21:51:58) LtJGAlexisWright: :: looks with interest at the information as it is delivered ::
(21:52:29) LtJGAlexisWright: ( we need a "Wright and Tav are reading shit and making discoveries" montage )
(21:52:40) VAdmBlackthorne: (Even Rocky had a montage)
(21:53:06) CdrHarper: ::: routes the info to sickbay and beeps Tav ::
(21:53:13) LtJGAlexisWright: ( we totally just watched Team America earlier this week )
(21:53:45) LtJGAlexisWright: Okay. Okay. Here's something.
(21:54:24) DoctorTav: :: looks up from the texts he's reading, thankful for the distraction from some words that have no translation :: Yes?
(21:54:31) CdrTKirr: (Can it be sort of a CSI-like montage?)
(21:55:02) CdrTKirr: (Where everything takes an incredibly short amount of time to do)
(21:55:02) DoctorTav: (I get to use the blood detector light and those cool orange glasses!)
(21:55:08) LtJGAlexisWright: Their history goes back a long way, so I think we can rule out the transplant theory. Plus, how would these creatures have evolved anywhere else? But I digress. Anyway, look at their calendars.
(21:55:43) DoctorTav: :: pulls up the calendars on his PADD :: What am I looking at?
(21:56:44) LtJGAlexisWright: They seem to have a "long count" calendar that cycles every few hundred years, and there are references in the religious text to Hora growing angrier and angrier and then being appeased and returning to a normal state at the end of these cycles
(21:57:22) LtJGAlexisWright: Couldn't that be an external orbital correction?
(21:58:59) DoctorTav: External orbital correction? What are you saying? :: busily stares at his view of the calendars, thumbing through and beginning to notice the pattern ::
(21:59:01) CdrTKirr: :: turns to Blackthorne after the comm blips off :: Perhaps if we convinced Captain Veshin we are their best chance, they will come with us.
(21:59:07) LtJGAlexisWright: but then it looks like over the past 1500 years or so, no matter what they sacrificed, Hora's wrath was never appeased...
(21:59:58) LtJGAlexisWright: I'm saying whoever made this planet was correcting the orbit on a regular basis to allow for the evolution of these lifeforms... but that those course corrections topped happening 1500 years ago.
(22:00:44) DoctorTav: :: keeps thumbing back on his pad :: So, you're saying that something was moving the entire planet every few hundred years? How would that not be catastrophic in and of itself? Wouldn't you put an end to their version of the Iron Age as it was beginning?
(22:01:16) LtJGAlexisWright: Look at the history texts! Their technological abilities have accelerated quite rapidly as Horath's orbit continued to decay without correction, because they needed shelter and then climate control and then a way off that godforsaken planet.
(22:01:33) VAdmBlackthorne: Or we could tow him.
(22:02:01) DoctorTav: And that would explain how they have warp capability, and possibly out of order.
(22:02:07) CdrTKirr: :: perks an eyebrow and dips her head ::
(22:03:13) LtJGAlexisWright: I don't think it would be noticeable, even. Any creator that makes a planet with 48 G's could potentially have other neat tricks to play with gravity. Something that dense and with that much mass could still be corrected gravitationally, in theory
(22:03:22) VAdmBlackthorne: +McKnight+ Blackthorne to McKnight.
(22:04:48) ColDougMcKnight: :: Looks up from his concole toward the ready room door. :: +Blackthorne+ McKnight here, sir.
(22:05:00) LtJGAlexisWright: Their technology seems and looks quite slapdash for what they are attempting to do. I think they focused on extremely specialized research at the expense of other things. And I think they don't really understand terraforming and they're literally experimenting with these worlds.
(22:06:16) DoctorTav: :: switches something on his PADD :: Do we know how far away and where Horath is?
(22:06:42) LtJGAlexisWright: I really can't tell whether they know at this point that their planet and all life that evolved on it are impossible and unnatural. When they said there was no other place like Horath and that they'd have to make one, they were right... but they don't have the technology to do what their creators did.
(22:06:49) VAdmBlackthorne: +McKnight+ Report to the ready room.
(22:07:00) LtJGAlexisWright: I think we have some nav charts here.
(22:08:04) LtJGAlexisWright: What are you thinking?
(22:09:16) ColDougMcKnight: +Blackthorne. + Aye sir.
(22:09:28) DoctorTav: :: pulls up the charts on his screen, as well as their current location :: Hmm. According to this, They are about 50 lightyears away. At Warp 3, that would be... :: does the math in his head :: ...about a three-year journey. But at Warp 9, we'd be looking at less than two weeks.
(22:10:27) ColDougMcKnight: :: Calls for a replacement at tactical before stepping down from the station. :: Looks like you're up. Harper. I'll be back as soon as I can, but nobody seems to want to leave the ready room once they're in today. Did her get new chairs in there or something and not tell me?
(22:10:38) LtJGAlexisWright: :: nods :: Okaaaaay,
(22:11:50) CdrHarper: Secret hot tub. :: sagenod ::
(22:12:01) DoctorTav: So, what I am saying is, what if we could go and have a look? We could see for ourselves what the situation is.
(22:13:15) LtJGAlexisWright: I seriously doubt we can stop Veshin from trying this again for 2+ weeks. What would we gain?
(22:13:35) ColDougMcKnight: Yeesh. Didn't realize they were one of THOSE couples.
(22:13:43) DoctorTav: :: shakes his head :: But what if we could take him with us?
(22:13:46) CdrHarper: :: smirks ::
(22:14:00) CdrTKirr: :: stands very professionally across the desk from Blackthorne ::
(22:14:28) DoctorTav: (Vulcan Public Display of Affection right there)
(22:14:32) LtJGAlexisWright: But we can't. They're not capable of Warp 9. And even if we could, again, what would we gain?
(22:14:45) ColDougMcKnight: :: Lets himself in, as per orders, and waits for the door to swish shut behind him. :: Sirs. What can I do for you?
(22:15:08) LtJGAlexisWright: Either "Yep, they're right, their planet is definitely falling into the star" or "nope, they made it all up!" Is that worth two weeks at this point?
(22:15:39) CdrTKirr: (15 min warning)
(22:15:55) VAdmBlackthorne: We need to return to the previous planet and conduct an away mission, and we need to make sure the Destroyer of Worlds out there :: gestures out the window :: doesn't get away.
(22:17:34) ColDougMcKnight: :: Tries to restrain a malicious smile with only partial success. :: I can arrange that any number of ways. Any preferences, or is that why I'm here?
(22:17:51) VAdmBlackthorne: I thought you would appreciate being able to do this as you please, Colonel.
(22:17:54) DoctorTav: Well, perhaps we could see if our theory is correct, and we could see if there is some technology on Horath that could be fixed. Mind you, we could not be the ones to fix it as their atmosphere and gravity would literally turn each of us into a tiny pebble, but once we had the schematics, I would bet Percy could figure it out, and we could train them to fix it. Or, we could get a really good look at their planet and see how long they have unti
(22:18:05) DoctorTav: ...they smack their sun.
(22:19:59) LtJGAlexisWright: :: chews on her lip and stares at a spot on the wall somewhere behind Tav :: Mmmmmmaybe....but I personally think that is unlikely to be successful. I think perhaps we can help them complete terraforming on one of the planets they've already killed.
(22:20:45) LtJGAlexisWright: They seemed to be hoping a specific thing would occur as a result of the catalytic reaction, but I'm not sure what that specific thing was.
(22:21:10) DoctorTav: Hmm. Well, we've asked them for all sorts of other information... Why don't we ask that?
(22:21:16) ColDougMcKnight: After what happened last time I ran into the bastard's handiwork, my FIRST choice would probably be just phasering off his engine assembly. Or hell, beaming them over and blowing the ship up entirely. That'd be one way to ensure this doesn't happen again.
(22:21:33) ColDougMcKnight: But since that would pretty much torpedo any peaceful solution you're probably still looking for...
(22:21:45) VAdmBlackthorne: Tractor them?
(22:22:28) LtJGAlexisWright: If we do that, we're going to be running to them over and over with onesie-twosie questions. I think we need to report what we've figured out to command and lay out our potential options, and then go from there.
(22:23:10) DoctorTav: :: nods :: I agree. Would you rather we do that from here, or the Bridge?
(22:23:43) LtJGAlexisWright: Hm. +T'Kirr+ Wright to T'Kirr.
(22:24:43) CdrTKirr: +Wright+ Go ahead, Lieutenant.
(22:25:11) CdrTKirr: (5 min warning)
(22:25:57) ColDougMcKnight: Sure...or we could dispatch a Shark squadron to watch him while we're gone. If you're anticipating a lengthy detour, we could also send a runabout to stand by with extra supplies and facilities.
(22:26:14) LtJGAlexisWright: +T'Kirr+ The Doctor and I are ready to brief on our findings. Would you prefer that we come to the Bridge to do so?
(22:27:09) CdrTKirr: Meet us in the conference room. We'll be there shortly.
(22:27:27) CdrTKirr: (Or the RR, Tav wants to see the hot tub)
(22:27:51) LtJGAlexisWright: +T'Kirr+ Acknowledged. :: stands and nods to Tav :: Shall we?
(22:28:01) DoctorTav: :: stands :: Let's.
(22:28:18) VAdmBlackthorne: Mmmm, I would rather bring him along.
(22:29:31) ColDougMcKnight: We could...invite him over on the pretext of showing him some climate control technologies at our disposal in a worst case relocation scenario? Wouldn't even have to be a lie.
(22:29:58) VAdmBlackthorne: :: shakes head :: Can we sustain a tractor beam at higher warp than his ship can travel?
(22:30:25) CdrTKirr: :: having stepped aside to take Wright's call, comes between them :: Gentlemen. Perhaps we can discuss this after we meet with Wright and Tav.

(22:33:20) CdrTKirr: So, lots of debate in Sickbay. Next week, the information will be presented and hopefully we'll start in on a course of action.
(22:33:41) DoctorTav: Wright's the smart one. I'll let her do all the talking.
(22:33:42) LtJGAlexisWright: Sorry for the extensive debate. I blame Tav for painting us into a corner!
(22:33:49) CdrTKirr: Sorry to end a bit early tonight, a bit of a stressful few days for me. -_- I'll be all good and normal next time.
