(10:15:24 PM) CdrTKirr: Oooh
(10:16:02 PM) CdrTKirr: Mm... rum. Having some now.
(10:16:28 PM) CdrTKirr: And by the way, rice cakes don't substitute well for graham crackers in smores.
(10:16:41 PM) CdrTKirr: Eh, but I don't have graham crackers.

(10:18:21 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Those do indeed sound like nasty smores. My sympathies.
(10:19:53 PM) CdrTKirr: Well to be fair, I only tasted the first one with alchoholic chocolate whipped cream on top. Too much bite to it.
(10:20:01 PM) CdrHarper: Alright, time to get going.

(10:22:36 PM) ColDougMcKnight has changed the topic to: Tonight, we skip ahead a little, as the first scheduled group assembles in the ship's main gym for some command mandated close quarters combat instruction. Hope you all did your stretches.
(10:23:31 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: aa ::
(10:24:15 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: Roxy with a knife and not a scapel? You're crazy!
(10:25:46 PM) ColDougMcKnight: (Also, Rachel isn't feeling well, so she'll be sitting this one out tonight. I have permission to NPC Percy if necessary.)
(10:26:52 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Also, since I'm reminded this is in fact my job...
(10:26:56 PM) ColDougMcKnight: BEGIN SIM
(10:26:58 PM) ColDougMcKnight: BEGIN SIM
(10:27:00 PM) ColDougMcKnight: BEGIN SIM
(10:28:19 PM) CdrHarper: :: in the gym, stretching ::
(10:28:52 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: also stretching...and groaning ::
(10:30:04 PM) ColDougMcKnight: :: Having done his warmup in his quarters on the way here, McKnight stands silently up front in his standard issue blue t-shirt and a pair of grey sweats. In his right hand, he holds a rubber prop knife. A bin of similar training weapons awaits those assmbled as they finish their workout prep. ::
(10:30:17 PM) LtKuari: (( I take it I'm here? )) :: stretches, but not groaning ::
(10:31:02 PM) LtKuari: :: keeps an eye trained on Doug ::
(10:31:25 PM) ColDougMcKnight: ( I imagine Kuari is there, but probably as one of the assistant instructors. All the marines have this training anyway. And I recall close in is her specialty, right?)
(10:31:30 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: thinks about all the ways this could damage her hands, casts a baleful eye at the 'captain' ::
(10:31:38 PM) CdrHarper: :: also in the standard blue t-shirt, but with shorts on ::
(10:32:24 PM) CdrHarper: :: finishes stretching and heads up to the Colonel :: The first class is all here as ordered, Captain.
(10:32:25 PM) ColDougMcKnight: :: Returns the glare with a predatory grin. :: Keep it up, doc. I'll assume it's your way of volunteering.
(10:32:27 PM) LtKuari: (( Good point ))
(10:33:22 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: I so cant wait for your next physical...
(10:34:09 PM) LtKuari: :: stands ready, watching everybody ::
(10:34:30 PM) ColDougMcKnight: :: Just chuckles softly before nodding to Harper and taking a deep breath. :: Okay, let's get this show started! First thing, I've got some good news for all of you.
(10:35:21 PM) LtSyvek: :: also there, but in an instructor's capacity ::
(10:36:17 PM) CdrHarper: :: gets in line with everyone else ::
(10:36:52 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Subsequent sessions will not be carried out under my personal instruction! Apparently, I have a ship to run. So after we're done here, I'll be handing you all off to Rak'nar, Kuari and Syvek, my top rated people in the various disciplines I hope to drill into you poor SOBs before Blackthorne gets back to bail you out.
(10:37:30 PM) ColDougMcKnight: ( Yeah, assume Rak'nar's standing around as well. I was just too lazy to open up a second tab. Also, because I can never keep them straight.)
(10:38:00 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: thinks this is not going to be fun...ever ::
(10:38:10 PM) CdrHarper: :: involuntarily glances nervously at Rak'nar for a split second before chiding herself ::
(10:38:37 PM) ColDougMcKnight: (BRB.)
(10:38:56 PM) LtKuari: :: gives Carre a sympathetic look ::
(10:39:33 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: sends Kuari a "If I get hurt the chocolate dries up!" look ::
(10:42:04 PM) ColDougMcKnight: That said, this is the one particular discipline at which, in our own practices, none of those mentioned have yet managed to get the best of me. So I just couldn't resist the opportunity to show off, just once. I'm a terrible person, I know.
(10:42:45 PM) CdrHarper: :: smirks ::
(10:43:15 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: tries not to roll her eyes... *sighs* ::
(10:43:58 PM) LtKuari: :: puffs out her chest a little, proud of her alpha ::
(10:44:10 PM) ColDougMcKnight: :: Holds his prop up above his head for inspection. :: I'm going to assume you've all seen one of these before. Unassuming, concealable, utilitarian...and in the right hands, under the right conditions, more deadly effective than any phaser.
(10:44:29 PM) CdrHarper: :: Would rather just shoot someone with a Mustang ::
(10:44:32 PM) CdrHarper: :: Oh, she's done that ::
(10:46:43 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Out of sheer, morbid curiosity, I'd like to start off by seeing how your instinct is to hold one of these things. Because we all know that Starfleet basic training doesn't teach you crap about it.
(10:48:19 PM) CdrHarper: :: takes a knife from the box and holds it like she would a kitchen knife, if she cooked ::
(10:49:42 PM) LtKuari: :: watches Harper take the knife with little twitches of her eyes and head ::
(10:49:42 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: takes a knife, bends the rubber back and forth a few times, balances it on the tip of her finger, grabs it with the blade pointing backwards ::
(10:51:11 PM) ColDougMcKnight: :: Grins ecstatically at Carre :: Oh, excellent!
(10:51:35 PM) ColDougMcKnight: :: Turns to Syvek. :: I don't know about you, but I would have been gravely disappointed if I didn't see somebody break out the serial killer grip.
(10:52:18 PM) LtSyvek: :: raises an eyebrow :: Hitchcock was an inspiration to many, Colonel.
(10:52:24 PM) LtKuari: :: doesn't get the reference, but keeps quiet anyway and watches some more ::
(10:52:29 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: grins back at McKnight ::
(10:54:43 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: flips the knife around, then grabs it by the hilt, thumb covering her fingers, looks innocent ::
(10:55:49 PM) LtKuari: :: is jealous of Carre's dexterous grip, just a little ::
(10:56:04 PM) CdrHarper: :: also doesn't get it, but tries to fix her grip ::
(10:56:20 PM) ColDougMcKnight: In all seriousness, there are two basic, traditional ways you see people holding this thing. The one I choose to hope the good doctor was working her way up to is ALSO called the icepick grip.
(10:57:29 PM) ColDougMcKnight: :: Demonstrates, blade pointed off to his right side as he rocks back and forth on his feet a little, anticipating an imaginary opponent. :: This grip has the advantage of making one look like a fucking badass. It's also a grip I would almost never recommend to anyone who finds their opponent also has a knife.
(10:57:31 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Why?
(10:58:06 PM) CdrHarper: :: has no damn clue ::
(10:59:20 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: Because it doesnt allow thrusting and is easy to block?
(11:00:20 PM) ColDougMcKnight: :: Grins :: Not bad for a first guess...not bad at all. Syvek or Kuari, why else would I tend to advise against this grip?
(11:00:57 PM) LtSyvek: You leave your core open to attack.
(11:01:18 PM) LtKuari: :: turns to Syvek ::
(11:02:26 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Very true. I also would have accepted "Shortens your effective range." Doctor Carre, here's a question I know you're superbly qualified to answer.
(11:03:00 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Where on the human body is it safe to take a slashing wound?
(11:05:17 PM) ColDougMcKnight: (By the way, anyone please let me know if this is becoming boring for you. I wanted to get some of this in, and we are down one, but I do have a real plot lined up as well.)
(11:05:18 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: Probably best would be your free hand.
(11:06:16 PM) CdrHarper: :: wonders about the Risan body ::
(11:07:19 PM) ColDougMcKnight: If you've got to get cut, and you should do your best to accept that's likely in a knife fight, that's not a bad pick. But remember, it's only a difference of a couple inches between the hand...
(11:09:24 PM) ColDougMcKnight: :: Gestures to his wrist. :: ...and some major arteries. And that's true, by the way, of the vast majority of humanoid species. Regardless, anywhere you take a knife wound, you're talking about blood loss, nerve damage, and the imminent likelyhood of shock. Meaning that in general, your objective is to strike fast, and strike FIRST.
(11:09:43 PM) ColDougMcKnight: So let me ask another question. Anyone here ever painted a house before?
(11:10:07 PM) CdrHarper: :: shakes her head ::
(11:10:20 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: doesnt think he is talking about watercolors ::
(11:11:13 PM) LtKuari: :: copies Harper and shakes her head ::
(11:11:23 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Too bad. Because what you DO want for the purpose is an awful lot like that.
(11:12:17 PM) ColDougMcKnight: :: Flips the knife over in his hand, the rubber blade now pointed to the crowd, his grip firm but not too tight, his wrist kept fluid. Thus positioned, he makes a few strokes through the air, demonstrating his point. ::
(11:13:17 PM) CdrHarper: :: nods and adapts her grip to what McKnight's doing ::
(11:13:17 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Doesn't look like much, does it? But every one of those is a trip to critical care...if it lands. Now, you try.
(11:15:10 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: does her best autopsy slash ::
(11:15:20 PM) CdrHarper: :: tries to copy the Colonel's movements, and finds it easier than she thought it would be ::
(11:15:48 PM) ColDougMcKnight: :: Suddenly breaks out into a grin. :: By the way, none of you especially like the clothes you brought, right?
(11:16:50 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: thinks this doesnt bode well for any of them ::
(11:16:56 PM) LtKuari: :: attempts to hide a grin, remembering McKnight using the same line in her first training class ::
(11:17:15 PM) ColDougMcKnight: It just occurred to me, I neglected to mention what phase two of today's training is. Rak'nar, please demonstrate phase two to the class.
(11:17:19 PM) CdrHarper: :: smirks ::
(11:17:45 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Rak'nar > :: Grins toothily and removes the cap on a bright red marker. ::
(11:18:02 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Time honored technique to show me just how much attention you guys are really paying.
(11:19:01 PM) CdrHarper: :: thinks her clothes are about to be as red as her hair ::
(11:21:22 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Okay, let's do some basic work on your posture and footing, then we'll break up into pairs. Later on, if you're interested, I'll demonstrate when it IS advisable to use the cool grip.
(11:21:41 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Also, in case you're wondering, no. Your interest has no actual bearing on it.
(11:23:32 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Kuari, please help Doctor Carre out. Syvek, Harper.
(11:24:33 PM) LtKuari: :: moves stand next to Carre, smiling encouragingly ::
(11:24:42 PM) LtSyvek: :: approaches Harper :: Pardon me, Commander, while I adjust you.
(11:24:53 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: smiles back :: Hello Lt.
(11:24:53 PM) LtKuari: (( rofl ))
(11:25:23 PM) CdrHarper: :: is adjusted into a proper stance ::
(11:28:04 PM) LtKuari: :: modifies her stance :: I stand a little differently, but you would be like this. Turn your back foot like this.
(11:28:58 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: faces Kuari with her feet apart, left foot slightly behind, knees slightly bent :: Which foot should I look at, you've got...um more.
(11:29:53 PM) LtKuari: (( sorry, neglected to mention she's copying a humanoid stance right now, hind legs ))
(11:30:48 PM) LtKuari: :: lowers her voice :: Later, you can teach me something about medicine, okay?
(11:31:24 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: grins :: Sure, I have autopsies later, you'll love it!
(11:31:51 PM) ColDougMcKnight: :: Pacing back and forth, nodding approvingly at the, admittedly heavily assisted proper postures. :: Good, good. Does that feel comfortable for you folks?
(11:32:03 PM) CdrHarper: :: nods :: It is definitely more natural.
(11:32:46 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: puts on her business face ::
(11:34:17 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Okay! Then I believe it's time to see how you plan on putting that footwork into practice.
(11:35:14 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Kuari, stay where you are, I think. And for Harper...I think it's time Rak'nar had a chance to join the class.
(11:35:36 PM) CdrHarper: :: blinks and eyes the Klingon warily ::
(11:35:43 PM) LtKuari: :: pulls out the training knife from her pouch, the one she's had since her own training, and looks to McKnight for what he wants to do ::
(11:35:58 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: tries not to laugh at the look on Kates face ::
(11:36:16 PM) CdrHarper: :: tells herself that this Klingon won't shoot her :: He is, um, armored.
(11:36:38 PM) ColDougMcKnight: :: Makes the stabby stabby motion to Kuari. ::
(11:37:38 PM) LtKuari: :: turns immediately to Carre and, making sure she first has eye contact, lunges for Carre, somewhat slowly ::
(11:37:47 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: leans back on her left foot, out of the knife arc ::
(11:38:42 PM) LtKuari: :: moves past Carre and turns towards her again ::
(11:38:59 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: pivots to face Kuari ::
(11:39:48 PM) ColDougMcKnight: :: And then, he turns back to Harper as Rak'nar advances with a rubber replica dk'tagh. :: Yeah, we sort of give him a free pass on the uniform code. It's all perfectly legit under the terms of the officer exchange program though, I assure you.
(11:40:03 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: Mind the tail!
(11:40:15 PM) LtKuari: :: hops back and forth for a moment before coming at Carre again ::
(11:41:12 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: uses her free hand to deflect the blade away from her, turning as the Lt. passes ::
(11:41:21 PM) CdrHarper: :: eyes wide, she warily backs away - he won't kill you he won't kill you he won't kill you ::
(11:42:11 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: (kates gonna diiiiie!)
(11:42:37 PM) LtKuari: :: suppresses the habit to counter and lets it go, coming to face Carre again :: I always watch my tail! Good deflect. :: grins ::
(11:42:51 PM) CdrHarper: :: notices a gap in the armor, narrows her eyes and grits her teeth, then stabs at it ::
(11:44:03 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: I think I'm actually supposed to try and stab you with this :: looks at the rubber blade in disgust ::, yes?
(11:45:54 PM) LtKuari: Your defense is excellent, but it isn't everything. Try to get me. :: moves forward, this time more quickly ::
(11:47:44 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Rak'nar> ::Lets the stab come in fairly close before he simply shifts his footing a bit, allowing a more solid plate to take the stab before he retalliates with a wide slash. ::
(11:48:13 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Oooh. Unless your point didn't actually have anything to do with dress code?
(11:48:24 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: watches the dragon move forward, moves her free hand to sweep the blade away and stabs toward center mass ::
(11:48:26 PM) CdrHarper: :: is quite easily slashed :: No. No it did not.
(11:48:57 PM) CdrHarper: :: still not taking her eyes off the Klingon ::
(11:49:57 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Right, right. My earlier points were more based on the fact that it doesn't take much force to penetrate flesh. A slash won't do it here. The truth is, you're a little short on oomph. What are you gonna do about it?
(11:50:52 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Rak'nar> ::Makes a strong overhead slash. Strong, but slow. Despite his fearsome demeanor, he's trying to "ease" Harper out of her fear induced sluggishness. Klingon style. ::
(11:51:36 PM) CdrHarper: :: startled, but quickly dodges the overhead slash with a step out to the left ::
(11:52:42 PM) CdrHarper: :: then switches to the reverse grip on a whim, and lunges in low, stabbing upward between plates of armor ::
(11:53:44 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Rak'nar> ::Pauses and smiles ever so slightly, giving away no more than that. McKnight, on the other hand, grins and claps. ::
(11:53:49 PM) LtKuari: :: dodges, her footing timed properly in preparation for the move :: Good! Now, come at me. :: beckons, her tail swaying in anticipation ::
(11:53:52 PM) ColDougMcKnight: (Ugh.)
(11:54:13 PM) CdrHarper: :: looks up, surprised at herself :: That is what you meant, yes?
(11:54:43 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Well done! An armored opponent is indeed one of the circumstances I spoke of earlier! The main advantage of the reverse grip is a significant increase in power.
(11:55:30 PM) CdrHarper: :: scientist comes out :: The leverage of the forearm increases torque, applying more force.
(11:56:21 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Very true. Basic rules. Here's another one for consideration.
(11:56:25 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: :: moves forward, inside Kuari's knife hand, her knife held low and uses an upward slashing movement ::
(11:57:13 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Rak'nar> :: Suddenly shoves Harper backward, immediately following up with a somewhat faster version of the overhead slash Harper successfully dodged a moment ago. ::
(11:57:21 PM) ColDougMcKnight: Don't get cocky.
(11:57:48 PM) CdrHarper: Ahhhh! :: takes the slash right on the head, off balance and unable to dodge ::
(11:58:14 PM) LtKuari: :: thrusts Carre's forearm away with her opposite hand and regains her footing, a grin on her face :: Have you had training before? You're good!
(11:58:56 PM) DrRoxanneCarre: Maybe a little. :: grins ::
(11:59:28 PM) ColDougMcKnight: You're all actually better than I expected. Now, instructors, kid gloves off, markers out!
(11:59:39 PM) ColDougMcKnight: (And on that note, since I'm reminded of the time...)
(11:59:43 PM) ColDougMcKnight: PAUSE SIM
(11:59:44 PM) ColDougMcKnight: PAUSE SIM
(11:59:48 PM) ColDougMcKnight: PAUSE SIM

(12:01:08 AM) LtKuari: :: pauses ::
(12:01:14 AM) VAdmBlackthorne: :: clapping from the peanut gallery, passes the popcorn to T'Kirr ::
(12:01:15 AM) ColDougMcKnight: Okay! Thank you for indulging me in my desire to indulge McKnight's first real executive mandate!
(12:01:49 AM) ColDougMcKnight: Hopefully next week, Rachel will be feeling more up to game, and we can move on to that real plot I promised.
(12:02:06 AM) CdrTKirr: :: takes it without hesitation and pops a kernel ::
(12:02:13 AM) ColDougMcKnight: Needless to say, however, you're all still training with knife and bare hands off screen...or on screen if you like, I suppose.
(12:02:34 AM) VAdmBlackthorne: Nicely done folks!
(12:02:42 AM) DrRoxanneCarre: Weeee!
(12:02:46 AM) ColDougMcKnight: Indeed!
(12:02:54 AM) DrRoxanneCarre: *stabbity stabs more*
(12:03:28 AM) ColDougMcKnight: Just imagine! In a couple weeks, the happy newlyweds will return to find that everyone onboard can now beat the crap out of them!
(12:03:36 AM) ColDougMcKnight: I mean...that everyone's glad to have them back.
(12:03:39 AM) DrRoxanneCarre: Hahaha
(12:03:41 AM) ColDougMcKnight: That's what I meant to say.
(12:03:51 AM) CdrTKirr: Thanks for the lesson. =)
(12:04:24 AM) DrRoxanneCarre: Nighty night peoples!
(12:04:27 AM) CdrHarper: Sweet!
(12:04:40 AM) DrRoxanneCarre left the room (quit: Exit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
(12:05:40 AM) LtSyvek left the room (quit: Exit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
(12:05:47 AM) ColDougMcKnight: Seriously though, thanks for bearing with me. Not our usual routine, but I've been wanting to try this for awhile.
(12:06:19 AM) CdrHarper: I think it worked out pretty well.
(12:07:14 AM) CdrTKirr: It was fun.
(12:07:22 AM) CdrTKirr: I was actually thinking we should do more of that.
(12:07:57 AM) CdrTKirr: We could teach each other things we know about things... really. Like I could teach something lifeguardy
(12:08:06 AM) CdrTKirr: That applies, obviously
(12:10:39 AM) LtKuari left the room.
(12:15:42 AM) ColDougMcKnight: Sure.
(12:18:16 AM) CdrHarper: Beer brewing and muay thai kickboxing?
(12:20:03 AM) CdrTKirr: Heh
(12:22:09 AM) CdrTKirr left the room.
